  17. Description of Working Group:

  19. The MHS-DS Working Group works on issues relating to Message Handling
  20. Services use of Directory Services.  The Message Handling Services are
  21. primarily X.400, but issues relating to RFC822 use of Directory and
  22. Directory support for RFC822 and X.400 interworking are in the scope of
  23. the Group.  Directory and Directory Services refer to the services
  24. based upon the CCITT X.500 recommendations and additional ISO
  25. standards, stable implementation agreements, and RFCs, as specified by
  26. the OSI-DS Working Group.  The major aims of the MHS-DS working group
  27. are:

  29. 1. Define a set of specifications to enable effective, large-scale
  30. deployment of X.400.
  31.  
  32. 2. Study issues associated with supporting X.400 communities which lack
  33. access to X.500 Directory, and define requirements for tools which: a)
  34. extract information from the X.500 Directory for use by non-X.500
  35. applications, b) upload information into the X.500 Directory.
  36.  
  37. 3. Coordinate a pilot project which deploys MHS information into the
  38. X.500 Directory and uses it to facilitate mail routing and address
  39. mapping.  The results of this pilot will be documented, and experience
  40. gained from the project will be fed back into the Internet
  41. specifications created by the working group.

  43. Goals and Milestones:

  45.   Ongoing Provide a forum to discuss Directory support of Message Handling 
  46.           Services including he operational aspects of X.500 based routing in 
  47.           the Internet community andissues of migration from non-X.500 to X.500
  48.           based routing.

  50.   Ongoing Establish and maintain liason relationships with similar groups 
  51.           working on X.400 and X.500, e.g. RRE Mail and Messaging Group, IETF 
  52.           OSI-DS Working Group, IETF X.400 Operations Working Group and the 
  53.           IETF MIME-MHS Working Group.
